What Color is the November Birthstone? The November Birthstones are Topaz and Citrine. Most people consider the yellow topaz specifically to be the November Birthstone. So basically the birthstone for the month of November is Yellow.


TOPAZ: The traditional as well as the modern November Birthstone has always been the Topaz. The word ‘Topaz’ is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word meaning ‘Fire’. The dictionary defines the topaz as “A colorless, blue, yellow, brown, or pink aluminum silicate mineral, often found in association with granitic rocks and valued as a gemstone, especially in the brown and pink varieties”.

Pure topaz in its natural state is actually is a colorless clear gemstone. It is the presence of other impurities and chemical elements that give the topaz its various colors. For e.g .the red and some pink topaz get their color because of the presence of chromium in the topaz crystals.

Topazes come in all different colors like red, pink, blue, brown, yellow and even black. By far the most popular color topaz is the blue topaz. It is really very difficult to find a natural blue topaz. Most of the blue topaz you see out there is irradiated natural clear topaz. When you do find the natural blue topaz it is significantly more expensive than the other topaz, and now you know why.

The topaz gemstone is an 8.5 on the Mohr’s hardness scale. Easy to clean and easy to maintain and not very easy to damage make this birthstone a favorite amongst all, even if it’s not their birthstone.

The topaz is a popular birthstone and abundantly found. The topaz is found Russia, in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Pakistan, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Brazil, Mexico; Flinders Island, Australia; Nigeria and the United States.

The Blue Topaz is the state gemstone of Texas and Utah considers the Orange Topaz to be its state gemstone.

The topaz birthstone has a lot of mystique associated with it. It is believed to grant the wearer supernatural powers and keep all evils at bay. Topaz supposedly has a cooling effect and people who have a quick temper are advised to wear this gemstone. If myth is to be believed it even cures a fever and a host of other illnesses.


CITRINE: The Second November Birthstone is the Citrine. The citrine resembles the yellow topaz and the two are often mistaken. The citrine birthstone comes in a wide range of shades of yellow ranging from pale yellow to dark amber.

Owing to its bright sunny color the citrine birthstone is thought to give one hope and rid them of depression. Its also is believed to give a person mental clarity and cure one from snake poison. It is even said to open a bridge between the mental state and intuition, helping the wearer connect with his or her spirit and sparking the creative mind.
